Understanding affiliate discount code restrictions and usage

Affiliate discount codes may have various restrictions that can prevent them from working as expected. Here are the most common issues and how they work:
Automatic code application vs manual entry
Affiliate codes are typically applied automatically when customers use your affiliate link. Customers don't need to manually enter the code at checkout - the discount is applied when they visit through your unique link.
If customers try to manually enter an affiliate code at checkout, they may encounter issues if another code is already applied, since discount codes cannot be combined.
One-time use per customer restriction
Many affiliate codes are set to "one time use per customer," meaning each customer can only use a specific affiliate code once. This includes:
Customers who have previously used that specific affiliate code
Customers who exist in the system from previous orders (including $0 orders from gifts or samples)
If a customer has used an affiliate code before or exists as a customer in the system, they may see an error message saying the code has already been used.
Minimum order requirements
Some affiliate codes have minimum purchase requirements. Check if your code has a minimum order value that must be met before the discount applies.
Code stacking restrictions
Discount codes typically cannot be combined or "stacked" with other promotional codes. Only one discount code can be applied per order. If a customer already has a code applied (either automatically or manually), they would need to remove it before applying a different code.
New customer only restrictions
Some affiliate codes are restricted to new customers only. In e-commerce systems like Shopify, a "new customer" is someone who has never placed an order before. This means customers who have received free products or samples are no longer considered "new" customers.
Promotional code conflicts
Affiliate codes may not work in combination with other promotional campaigns or site-wide sales. Some promotions are designed to be exclusive and cannot be used with affiliate discounts.
Troubleshooting tips
If customers report issues with affiliate codes:
Confirm they're using your affiliate link rather than manually entering the code
Check if they've used the code before
Verify their cart meets any minimum order requirements
Ensure no other promotional codes are already applied
Check if they're an existing customer in the system
