Troubleshooting: “You’re not the thread owner” when requesting usage rights

Last updated: July 28, 2026

Issue

When trying to send a message or request usage rights from a creator, you may see the following error:

“You’re not the thread owner.”

What this means

Meta has assigned the Instagram DM conversation to another messaging platform connected to the Instagram account.

This commonly happens when the brand uses an automation or messaging tool, such as ManyChat, to manage Instagram conversations.

Because the other platform currently owns the conversation thread, Meta does not allow Superfiliate to send messages or usage-rights requests within that specific DM thread.

How to troubleshoot

1. Check connected messaging platforms

Confirm whether the Instagram account is connected to another tool that manages DMs, such as.

2. Review the conversation in Instagram

Open the creator’s conversation directly in Instagram and check whether the thread is being managed by an automation or another platform.

3. Release or transfer the conversation

Depending on the connected platform, you may need to:

  • Close or release the conversation from the other platform

  • Disable the automation managing that thread

  • Transfer conversation ownership back to Instagram or Superfiliate

The exact steps will depend on the third-party platform being used.

4. Try again in Superfiliate

Once the other platform is no longer controlling the thread, return to Superfiliate and try sending the message or usage-rights request again.
